A ten-year Member of the Assembly, Charles D. Lavine serves as Chair of the Ethics Committee and Co-chair of the State Legislative Ethics Commission. He served as Chair of the Assembly Sexual Harassment/Retaliation Policy Revision Task-force, which developed a modern and model set of Policy standards. Lavine is a member of the following standing committees: Codes, Health, Higher Education, Insurance, Judiciary and Social Services. His past positions have included Chair of the Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Estates and Trusts and Chair of the Administrative Regulations Review Commission. As a member of the New York State Assembly, Lavine has served as President of the New York Chapter of the National Association of Jewish Legislators for the past 4 years. He was also selected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for the 2012 presidential election.

Prior to his time in the Assembly, Lavine was a Legal Aid Lawyer and then moved into private practice specializing in criminal defense and municipal law with offices in Manhattan and Queens. He served as counsel for the North Country Reform Temple and the Glen Cove Community Development and Industrial Development Agencies, and he was a Member of the Glen Cove Planning Board. In 2003, Lavine was appointed to an open seat on the Glen Cove City Council, to which he was subsequently elected, beginning his work as a public official.

Lavine attended the University of Wisconsin and New York Law School. He currently resides in Glen Cove, New York. He is married to Ronnie, a retired public school educator and active Planned Parenthood of Nassau County volunteer. Their children are Greg, District and Intergovernmental Director for United States Congresswoman Grace Meng, and Andria, a Social Worker with the Kaiser Permanente Healthcare System in Oakland, California.
